The wise grasshopper will observe that there is more to all these announcements of breaches than meets the eye, and that you can pretty much kiss off any notion that the MSM will keep you informed or report details honestly. These days, you have to do your own leg work if you want to come to any understanding you can believe in. Look for primary documents and/or corroboration from sources you can suss out for integrity.

This story appears to be just heating up. And it has the smell of war ahead. Probably Iran. No nukes yet, and lots of oil.

UPDATE: 5/10

Colonial confirmed today that they were hacked by the ransomware group, DarkSide, with roots in Romania. No word on ransom demand has been published yet, although previous demands by this group have been between $1m - $4 m. DarkSide is like "Robin Hood," and has a heart of gold, we're told by Bleeping Computer, pledging to do no evil to hospitals, education places or government facilities. In addition, they are wont to donate some of the ransom to charity.

Further, they confirmed to the Associated Press the suspicion that none other than Kevin Mandia of FireEye (and Mandiant) has been called in to investigate. Though AP is currently framing the breach as a criminally-motivated operation, with the introduction of Mandia expect political assessments to follow that lead to Iran or Russia. Also expect a photograph of DarkSiders and the building they operate out of, let's say, in Iran this time. Remember, behind their masks they have hearts of gold.

Also, expect FireEye to suggest that Colonial install SolarWinds,

According to NYT, gas prices are expected to go up for the short term in the Northeast as the pipeline remains down for security purposes. And Colonial raises cash for the ransom through the price hike.

Of course, they can apparently get the DarkSide hickey off their neck by merely downloading an application from the anti-virus company BitDefender for free.

There should be some barking at the bowser over that. Windfall time.

More updates will follow, if my sonnet-driven schedule permits.
