Hypocritical Human Rights policy
We vigorously wag our finger at China and others for their lack of freedoms and dismal human rights record. We tend to forget that Gitmo is 100% American, even though it is on foreign soil. We supposedly sent the "worst of the worst" terrorists there, according to Rumsfeld. But don't worry, over 600 of the 800 or so that were sent there have been released back to their native countries. We only tortured them there for a few years before giving them back their lives and any further terrorist activity they wish to partake in. Read my article on it.
The CIA was not to be outdone, either. Their policy of Extraordinary Rendition ensured that innocent people, like Canadian Maher Arar, would be tortured by other countries and then released without ever being charged of anything. And I think that Americans have completely forgotten about the shame that is Abu Ghraib. And lest we forget, My Lai happened in Vietnam and showed just how merciless we can become when we are pumped full of lies. These weren't aberrations, either. These are the ones caught on tape and paraded in front of the world. The vast majority will never be brought to light.
We support dictators who boil their enemies to death. We support dictators who remove their entire Supreme Court justices because their ruling didn't please the despot. We give billions of dollars of aid to countries that attack others indiscriminately and kill children at school with outlawed White Phosphorous.
At the same time, we create immoral economic embargoes to punish island countries like Cuba. Last year the entire world voted at the UN for the 19th consecutive year to stop this stupid, illogical and immoral relic of past mistakes. Well, that's not entirely true. Only 187 countries voted to stop it. Three whole countries voted against the resolution, the United States, Israel and - Palau. Palau?? WTF?? I wonder how many millions of my tax dollars went to secure that vote.
We strove to enforce the Iraqi economic embargo for over a decade. Why? Apparently, it was because killing babies was a good way to show Saddam we meant business. Just ask Albright, who was quite fine with the fact that by 1996 an estimated 500,000 babies had died as a direct result. Was Saddam or his two sons ever affected in the least by the embargo? Of course not. What do you expect, that we actually punish the guilty?
Again, my question is, "Is America Worth Saving?" This is not a trivial question and I am not making light of its intent. There is nothing trivial about the world's only super power and its policy around the world. We have been given the reins of the world since 1944 and told, "It's yours, kid. Just don't screw it up."
