Will GOP Senators benefit from quick Kavanaugh vote or a delay for more investigation? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that he wants to hold a vote on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh in the next few days. Democrats are demanding that the vote be postponed indefinitely for an FBI investigation of every accusation made against Judge Kavanaugh. Will Republican senators and senate candidates running in 2018 be helped more by a quick vote or by more delays to allow thorough investigation?
The Senate should proceed to a vote during the first week in October. Voters can see that the Democrats are smearing Kavanaugh with unproven accusations, and will punish the GOP if they allow Kavanaugh to become the victim of endless delays.
The Senate should postpone a vote, allowing time for a thorough investigation of all accusations against Kavanaugh. That is the only fair way to handle the controversy, and voters will punish the GOP if it is seen as failing to seriously look into each and every accusation, no matter how little proof the accuser has.
