A Book For All Ages

By green eyes on February 4, 2014

Format: Paperback

There are so many reasons as to why I gave this gem of a book five stars. Most likely too many to mention, so I will try my best to summarize my thoughts briefly.

This is not a book only for the young, but also for the young at heart. I am a woman in her sixties who thoroughly enjoyed the shenanigans of two young boys, Joey, a timid, somewhat sheltered Catholic fourteen yr old, and his free wheeling highly energized friend, Freeman, who lives for the day and the adventures it holds.

I was completely absorbed in the story, laughing so hard as I read it in bed, that I often woke my husband and had to explain what I was laughing at. And then I found myself upset because of the hold that the church had on Joey and his struggle to understand it all. I love the inner dialogue Joey has on an almost constant basis regarding the adventures of this summer.

I would say that 100% of the book is a rollicking good time. It took me back to a simpler time in my life when my mother would send to the store with a quarter and instructions to buy a loaf of bread. I used to walk through my favorite wooded area without fear, and breathe in the cool clean air. Joey brought this and many more memories back for me to ponder and smile on. Sitting by ponds (sometimes taking a "mother nature dip"), catching fire flies, and gazing at clouds on a summer day that seemed to go on forever. Joey is not only part of a side splitting, laugh-out-loud story, but also touches on subjects of environmentalism and bullies. Not to mention the need for everyone to re-evaluate religion in their own lives.

I encourage you to read this most wonderful book. You will not be disappointed. And as Mr Geery asks, "Do you like to go to bed with a smile on your face?" I do and I did! And I greatly look forward to a sequel!

In my run for U.S. Senate against Utah's Orrin Hatch, I posted many progressive ideas and principles that I internalized over the years. I'm leaving that site up indefinitely, since it describes what I believe most members of our species truly (more...)
