SCHMOOKLER: But then I also read this piece about how Obama's being dragged down by what the press is doing with this Balgojevich thing. So I'm wondering: is the whole business hurting Obama or is it blowing up in the face of his enemies?
What I would say for sure is that it is hurting America. At a time when an offer is being made for building bridges and tackling our current national disaster, the evil forces that gave us this dark time are making their habitual choice: divert as much energy as possible into creating conflict, into fomenting division within the American body politic. That's the choice that has made the past sixteen years such a disgrace to the Republicans: first, by going after Clinton in the spirit of a coup d'etat, and then by giving us this fascist and destructive Bushite regime.
And now that spirit is responding to this moment by trying to smear Obama despite the fact that all that is presently known runs contrary to the innuendos..
It is good that some Republicans are speaking up against this spirit. Even if it is out of self-interest –“this is a losing strategy”-- it's good news. In fact, it's good news because of what it seems to suggest about the American people: that Americans have come to the point where, unlike in the early years of this decade, they are choosing the good spirit in preference to the evil one. Partly, that's because Obama has maneuvered the situation so that he's virtually unbeatable, at least for the moment. But partly that's also because Americans --right now 70 % or so, the polls say—when they look at Obama see him as a good thing.
I would like to think that these Republicans would make a more constructive choice than these smears out of a sense of what's right, but I have no trust in Newt Gingrich to have actual scruples. I expect he's just mirroring what he understands is how this is playing in America.
But there is at least a suggestion, in this article, of a degree of moral concern, and maybe one will eventually be able to see the article above as one of the opening moves in what became a battle for the soul of the Republican Party. In this possible struggle, as I envision it, the darkness that has animated the Bushite regime will be going up against something that is no darker than the Republican Party traditionally has been.
