From colonial times onward, the prestige culture in American culture has been dominated by inner-directed character types.
Arguably, modern capitalism capitalizes on inner-directed character types, and so does modern science. In general, academia today is the home of inner-directed types.
In broad terms, Republicans today who extol capitalism and libertarianism are inner-directed types.
In terms of well-known persons, President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush would be examples of other-directed character types.
