This is the inevitable result of allowing psychopaths to run us, and our world. Corporations control the market place (e.g., the food), the factories, the schools, the government, the world and us. As comedian George Carlin stated, "they own us." This ownership makes us vulnerable and destroys our freedom. Consider Carlin's speech (language may be offensive to some... or has Trump deadened our ears to offense?):

Such is the power of affect arousal such as humor, horror, love, and sex in relationship to memory consolidation and understanding. (Weingartner, Hall, Murphy, and Weinstein, 1996).

It now appears that "we the people" are intent on enslaving all of nature along with 90% of our own human population. Does that "we" include you and me? Instead of cooperating within the Earth's processes, "we" attempt to control them. Likewise, our educational systems are about control and domination. The ethos is "line up, shut up and do as you're told." Our children are nothing more than McDonald's hamburgers where our choice, "have it your way", is revealed as a vicious joke. Whoops! That's Burger King's motto! Dumb ole me!

Corporate mentality is all about standardization alongside control and domination. In school, the emphasis on standardized education and tests is also about control and domination. To be dominated is actually to be "damned" in my view. Under corporate control, we are all dammed up and are not able to flow naturally. Perhaps our being damned is our Hell?

Regarding the divide and conquer ethos of our nation and corporations, Giroux states: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divide_and_rule

If the right-wing billionaires and apostles of corporate power have their way, public schools will become 'dead zones of the imagination,' reduced to anti-public spaces that wage an assault on critical thinking civic literacy and historical memory."

- Henry Giroux, 2013.

Such is the technology of "standardized testing." Free thinking indeed! Dead zones in our children's and our minds mirror the dead zones within oceans, rivers and forests. The devastation of our minds co-creates the devastation of the planet. Pollution in the atmosphere mirrors the pollution of our minds.

Top-down control-oriented management structures include a desire for growth-without-end, alongside the corporate ethos of control and domination. This mindset has caused us to make a mess of the planet, our lives and future generations. http://www.mollylarkin.com/what-is-the-7th-generation-principle-and-why-do-you-need-to-know-about-it-3/

Nature has spent billions of years evolving billions of species whose interactions create thousands of complex ecosystems that the human species are just learning to understand and appreciate. Humanity (the Western, "civilized" part of it) has spent the last few thousand of those years disrupting and destroying nature's work. Every technological advance we make has broken down parts of the process of natural evolution. We are in ever-increasing danger of destroying a habitable planet including our own species.
