United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in India. Two pacts were signed that held deep strategic impact on the region and the whole Asia as well:

(1)Â Â the End-User Verification Agreement, which gives rights to United States experts to inspect hi-tech military hardware sold to India

(2)Â Â the Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty, viewed as an important step towards the ultimate goal of eventual elimination of nuclear weapons. Text of U.S. and India Joint Statement

United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced plans to increase the United States Army, stretched thin by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, from the current 547,000 soldier by recruiting an additional 22,000. Source: CBS Evening News, July 20, 2009.

Day180/July21st/Tuesday: the President delivered remarks on health care reform and the F-22 Raptor military fighter jet in the Rose Garden of the White House. On healthcare, the President said:

 "I know that there are those in this town who openly declare their intention to block reform. It's a familiar Washington script that we've seen many times before. These opponents of reform would rather score political points than offer relief to Americans who've seen premiums double and costs grow three times faster than wages. They would maintain a system that works for the insurance and the drug companies, while becoming increasingly unaffordable for families and for businesses.
