Is it that big of a stretch then to posit the theory that the constant repetition of the word coup, the repeated false narrative that the impeachment process is a "soviet style", "secret" process to subvert the will of the American people, to nullify their vote in 2016 and is tantamount to the DESTRUCTION OF DEMOCRACY is really another false flag operation? Every one of the previous phrases is an easily disprovable lie and yet we see Gaetz ratchet up the lies with his highly propagandized "storming" of the hearings, accompanied by some republicans who, pretending to forcing their way in, were already authorized to be in the room and chose not to. Could it be that they believe if they convince enough people that the Democrats are the enemy of democracy and that they are literally conducting a coup, that they will be justified in using extreme measures to "retake control" of the government. Hmmmm".
Think about it. This has been the modus operandi of right wing movements and the CIA for at least a century and we are seeing it employed more and more. If someone doesn't like the outcome of their election, they refuse to concede citing an "unfair" election. As often as Trumpers STILL say that Democrats can't "get over Hillary's loss" and that is why they are doing all of this, they are already preparing people, psychologically conditioning the Trump crowd that they must be ready to "defend the Republic" against this "coup".
I am reminded of Venezuela where Juan Guido refused to participate in the elections, told his supporters to boycott them, and then declared himself the rightful ruler citing the elections were not fair. Elections can be scrutinized as unfair, but by refusing to participate in the process you don't get to step in and declare that you weren't included, it wasn't fair and you are now the winner. Hillary as much as I despise her, conceded the election to Trump. Her people can make their complaints, progressives can suggest changes to the process that can be voted on democratically etc. Later. But she DIDconcede. And for the last 3 years Trump has pushed the limits even over the edge of being lawful in the use of his power. An impeachment doesn't UNDO the 2016 election anymore than Trump's obsessive need to abolish every single thing Obama did, is UNDOING Obama's election. It is a ridiculous assertion on its face. You can't go back in time and change what happened. If the Democrats REFUSED to transfer power to Trump after he won, by whatever process they chose, that could have been called a coup.
The coup argument is a distraction, but a dangerous one. The Republicans are refusing to participate in the process. Many Republicans permitted to attend the "secret" hearings didn't even bother. They didn't listen to any testimony. They didn't bother to raise the questions that apparently seemed to be burning in the soul of Matt Gaetz. Graham who insisted he would consider evidence of a quid pro quo if it was presented to him, now says he won't even read the information he demanded. Why? His excuse is that the "whole process is a sham"
The true reason they don't want to participate in the process is simple. Because at the end of the day, when impeachment goes to the Senate, they will have the complete power, but also the choice, to vote for Trump in defiance of the hard facts which show impeachable conduct. They are doing all of this to prevent the uncomfortable responsibility of voting and having to justify that vote. Ghaham who called Trump a dangerous narcissist, a habitual liar, a moral, corrupt etc is now one of Trump's biggest boot lickers and that is obviously because he wants Trump's base to vote for him. They are not acting on moral basis but political instinct. That is to be expected. But to see them jump on the coup band wagon, espousing the notion that everyone is lying but Trump, that this is a "vast left wing conspiracy" is frightening.
As the Republican party drifts farther and father into their Trumpian psychosis, their members literally retreating into elevators at top speed and head butting cameras to avoid answering the most basic questions, many wonder when enough will be enough.
Even more disturbing is the thought that if Trump is impeached, that the non-stop propaganda being pushed by Trump himself, those in the media, Republicans and other conservatives is laying the groundwork for another civil war. There is already widespread talk of civil war on the right, many people are making real preparations for what would be a self fulfilling prophecy. https://www.thedailybeast.com/trumps-civil-war-tweet-didnt-come-from-nowherein-fact-it-came-from-here
Those pushing this narrative are not fearful of civil war but long for it. They are excited for it. They are itching for it. If it comes, who knows how widespread the violence would be. But surely, in the aftermath we will find ourselves asking "How did this happen? How were some of our citizens convinced to attack their neighbors?"
