Senate: passed 77 (60 Democrats and 17 Republicans)-6 (1 Democrat and 5 Republicans)

House: passed 382 (284 Democrats and 81 Republicans)-33 (15 Democrats and 15 Republicans)

Civil Rights Act (1964): One of the most significant pieces of legislation

in our country's history prohibited racial discrimination in public facilities, government, and employment.

Senate- passed 67 (46 Democrats and 21 Republicans)-33 (6 Democrats and 27 Republicans)

House- passed 289 (153 Democrats and 136 Republicans)-126 (91 Democrats and 35 Republicans)

1965 Medicare and Medicaid: This controversial legislation provided health insurance for those over 65 and for poor families.

Senate- passed 70 (57 Democrats and 13 Republicans)-24 (7 Democrats and 17 Republicans)

House- passed 307 (237 Democrats and 70 Republicans)-116 (48 Democrats and 68 Republicans)

Economic Recovery Tax Cut (1981): The bill, also known as the 1981 Reagan Tax Cuts, reduced marginal income tax rates to provide incentives for small businesses and saving. Many Democrats who voted for the measure were referred to as "Reagan Democrats."

Senate- passed 89 (37 Democrats and 52 Republicans)-11 (10 Democrats and 1 Republican)

House- passed 238 (48 Democrats and 190 Republicans)-195 (194 Democrats and 1 Republicans)
