Yet, that is exactly what Israel has done. Fact: Israel exists, while a Palestinian State does not. What is little understood, and even less mentioned by the press, Israelis have played a clever game to foil their "true position". Israel, while mouthing "two-state solution" for the US and world press, are cunning enough to know that is all they need to do to get a "free pass" -- year after year; and decade after decade.
All their actions have foiled a contiguous and reasonable Palestinian State with right of return of the refugees (caused by the original birth of an Israeli State), to return to ONLY the newly formed Palestinian State. They have manipulated the American public by speaking with forked tongue. Facts on the ground -- Hamas may say they want to destroy the Israeli State (something America would never allow), but in actuality for 63 years the Israelis have destroyed the existence of a Palestinian state.
Know their hearts by their deeds not their "Orwellian speak".
Consider also, in response to Obama's speech on the Arab Spring and the Middle East Peace process on May 19, 2011, Bibi Netanyahu shot down the pre-1967 borders, as the starting point, with swaps of land to make for a contiguous state.
Bibi Netanyahu: "While Israel is prepared to make generous compromises for peace, it cannot go back to the 1967 lines because these lines are indefensible.
"They do not take into account certain demographic changes on the ground that have taken place over the last 44 years."
If America sticks to its precepts of blind justice, and "laws over persons", Netanyahu's contention that the 1967 borders were a non-starter due to " certain demographic changes on the ground" , is akin to a thief who is finally caught after a decade, having stolen some $250K from an elderly couple. On being asked by the Judge to return the money in full, imagine the thief making the following case: of course that is not possible, I have built a new life, using the money to buy myself a nice house and a fancy car! Judge, you need accept the new facts on the ground! Would any court in the USA accept that as a reasonable response?
Obama's speech at AIPAC on May 22, 2011 was disappointing; because he is refusing to honor American values of the "Rights of peoples to self determination", in saying he would veto the planned vote in September 2011 in the UN Assembly for a Palestinian State.
Obama stated, in part: "These are the facts. I firmly believe, and repeated on Thursday, that peace cannot be imposed on the parties to the conflict. No vote at the United Nations will ever create an independent Palestinian state. And the United States will stand up against efforts to single Israel out at the UN or in any international forum. Because Israel's legitimacy is not a matter for debate.
Moreover, we know that peace demands a partner -- which is why I said that Israel cannot be expected to negotiate with Palestinians who do not recognize its right to exist, and we will hold the Palestinians accountable for their actions and their rhetoric."
