To the Editor:
There is no way to trust a voting paper trail from a computer. The clearest
statement on this is to give an example.
A computer can easily be programmed, without the knowledge of anyone except
the programmer, to accept a vote for Candidate A, give the vote to Candidate
B and print a vote on the paper trail for Candidate A.

The French just finished a presidential election with 84 percent of eligible
voters participating in the runoff by using paper ballots.
Is there something the French know about holding elections that we should
perhaps study?
