Now, more than four years after the invasion, as the carnage continues unabated in Iraq and the U.S. death toll tops 3,600, almost two-thirds (62%) of the U.S. public believes that the war was a mistake. More than half of the U.S. public believes the Bush administration deliberately misled the American public about Iraq’s possession of weapons of mass destruction.
In the face of overwhelming public opinion the war drums are being played again in Washington, D.C. The Bush administration is accusing Iran (another member of the alleged “axis of evil”) of contributing to American deaths in Iraq, arguing that circumstantial evidence indicated that Iran was arming Iraqi insurgents with deadly roadside bombs. President Bush recently issued the following warning, “When we find the networks that are enabling these weapons to end up in Iraq, we will deal with them… We’re going to do something about it, pure and simple.”
Perhaps then, the findings of this research can best serve as a warning to us all. As the saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice… ”
