The Time for Compromise is Over

“President Bush may be content with keeping our troops mired in the middle of an open-ended civil war, but I am not; and neither are most Americans. In the coming days Democrats will continue to reach out to the President. And we hope Congressional Republicans, who have remained silent throughout this debate will work with us as well. If President Bush thinks by vetoing this bill he will stop us from working to change the direction of this war, he is mistaken.” (5/2/07)

It is good to see that Congress is finally standing up to Mr. Bush. They will never have a better opportunity:

A recent Harris poll found only 28 percent of Americans give President Bush a positive approval rating--down from 32 percent in February (The Wall Street Journal, 4/26/07)

A Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 58 percent of Americans trusted Democrats in Congress to do a better job handling the Iraq situation, compared with 33 percent who trusted Bush. (The Washington Post, 4/16/07)

“Every opinion poll shows that, by large majorities, Americans support the efforts of Democrats to force President Bush to begin withdrawing our troops.”--Paul Campos, The Rocky Mountain News, 5/1/07

The new Congress must not compromise with this President. Republican-controlled Congresses went along with him for six years; and in the process, they managed to compromise our Constitution; our international treaties; and the honor of our nation by consenting to a war of aggression, the creation of secret prisons, and the torture of prisoners. That is enough compromise.

There are good reasons for optimism, but we cannot become complacent. We must continue to contact our Senators and Representatives to demand an end to Mr. Bush’s war. If you have already contacted your Senators and Representative--contact them again. If you have never contacted them, now is the time to add your name to the list of Americas demanding an end to the Iraq War.

Tell Congress to stand up to the President--no retreat--no compromise. Tell them to do whatever it takes to stop the war and bring the troops home.

If you do not know the names of your Senators and Representatives--the Capitol switchboard operators can help you. Please call: 800-614-2803; 888-355-3588; or 202-224-3121.
