For example, NED gave $300,000 to the IRI to "encourage the development of viable, inclusive political party practices" in Nicaragua. As it turns out, the funds went almost exclusively to assist pro-US, ultra-conservative parties in election campaigns against the popular Sandinista party (FSLN). Similar kinds of activities were funded in other Central American countries in order to install candidates sympathetic to US interests, especially those who favored passage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).

Hundreds of thousands of US taxpayer dollars were turned over to groups interested in Cuba. In one case, the Puerto Rico based Disidente Universal de Puerto Rico received more than $60,000, "to increase the flow of independent information to Cuba and within Cuba." A harmless goal on the surface, but in reality the money funds the publication of a magazine that specifically calls for the overthrow of the Cuban government. At least 16 groups with this particular goal received close to $2.4 million from the NED in 2005 alone. Find out about other groups that receive US taxpayer dollars through the NED for these purposes here.
