We have taken the natural human emotions and reactions of love, respect and caring and tried to turn them into a book of rules – with the most spectacular failure rate in human existence.
I have a wonderful Jamaican midwife as a neighbour who tragically lost her husband after 12 happy years together. In spite of this she has a fabulous sense of humour and lightning quick responses. One of our first conversations was after she had just returned from a trip to Jamaica and how much she had enjoyed it.
I said to her “I can see you’ve had a good time because you’ve got such a great tan!!”
Immediately she came back saying “Yes and I got my money’s worth because its an “all over” tan!!”
We both laughed and felt very comfortable with this joking – and have had many similar ripostes since.
My point here is that in the new Global Village old beliefs and ways of relating and carrying on cannot survive. The only way ahead is to accept our connectedness and in so doing REVERE OUR INDIVIDUALITY.
