How does "gather facts" equate to erasing tapes?

Sen. Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, cited Michael Mukasey's refusal during confirmation hearings in October to describe waterboarding as torture.
Mukasey's Justice Department and the CIA's internal watchdog announced Saturday they would conduct a joint inquiry into the matter.

That review will determine whether a full investigation is warranted. "He's the same guy who couldn't decide whether or not waterboarding was torture and he's going to be doing this investigation," said Biden, who noted that he voted against making Mukasey the country's top law enforcer.
"I just think it's clearer and crisper and everyone will know what the truth is ... if he appoints a special counsel, steps back from it," said Biden, D-Del.

Look at this "White House press secretary Dana Perino has said Bush "has no recollection" of hearing about either the tapes' existence or their destruction before being briefed about it Thursday morning."

Herr Karl has Perino saying "Well, one, I haven't - I'm not allowed to characterize the President's reaction to this, but what I can tell you is that he - as I said Friday, he has complete confidence in General Hayden, and that remains."

They have to do something about "The White House has declined comment on one news report that Harriet Miers, then the White House counsel, knew about the CIA's planned destruction of the videotapes in 2005 and urged the agency not to destroy the tapes."

Anyone who believes word one from this crew hasn't been awake sine 9/11 as "Biden said Hayden ought "not to be the judge of whether or not his ordering or his condoning the destroying of the tapes was lawful."
"It appears as though there may be an obstruction of justice charge here, tampering with evidence, and destroying evidence. And this is _ I think this is
one case where it really does call for a special counsel. I think this lead right into the White House," Biden said. "There may be a legal and rational explanation, but I don't see any on the face of it."

Either "Harriet Miers, then the White House counsel, knew about the CIA's planned destruction of the videotapes in 2005 and urged the agency not to destroy the tapes" or she didn't. We can't trust this crew-W's team including
the CIA. Hayden was the crook originally behind W's illegal NSA eavesdropping on US citizens, and Mukasey couldn't decide if water-boarding was torture--so of course we need an independent counsel, as Biden said.

Earlier Harriet Miers was given executive privilege in attorneys firings so what is the likelihood she'll say anything about this?

Now we are hearing that Democrats knew about the torture. Even though they were pledged to secrecy due to the classified nature of the matter, and they knew how Karl linked a Vietnam war hero, Max Cleland, to bin laden, and Herr Rove would do the same to them, the GOP is pretending that the Democrats should have raised holy hell about the torture if they opposed it.

How could they with W's crew investigating newspapers that wrote storied counter to their goals? Which part of the news media would cover anything anti-big bro 43? Herr Karl gleefully ruined not only Max Cleland, but former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschele, and John Kerry, among an abbreviated list. Powerlessly fighting the corruption of the GOP would be tantamount to giving the GOP wanted they really wanted-permanent GOP gains.

Do you think that the GOP rumors about the Democrats sitting on their reservations about torture seem realistic?

Do you think that the virtual tour had explicit scenes of waterboarding? They probably were shown pictures of a person having a bubble bath and being asked what their affiliation to bin laden was.

Besides, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, among the lawmakers who attended the briefing, issued a statement on Sunday saying that she eventually did protest the techniques and that she concurred with objections raised by a Democratic colleague in a letter to the C.I.A. in early 2003-which was a few months after they initially saw it and four years ago.

We don't have objectivity. We are too close to it. England's BBC NEWS article "Americas | Democrats call for CIA tape probe" at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7133968.stm
puts it "The past six years, the Bush administration has run roughshod over our ideals and the rule of law," said veteran Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy.

"Now, when the new Democratic Congress is demanding answers, the administration is feverishly covering up its tracks," he said...
Jennifer Daskal, senior counsel with Human Rights Watch, said the wiping of the tapes was "destruction of evidence", and described the reasons given by the CIA as "disingenuous".

Sounds fair and balanced to me.
