An impeachment bill introduced in the Illinois General Assembly has 19 co-sponsors; impeachment bills have also been introduced in the California and Vermont state legislatures.

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced H. Res. 635, a resolution creating a committee to investigate the Administration's possible impeachable offenses. Among the 36 co-sponsors are Minnesotans Oberstar, Sabo and McCollum.

ImpeachPac currently lists 28 candidates for federal office who support impeachment or a probe into impeachable offenses. Carl Sheeler, a finance professor, business owner and former Marine, is a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Rhode Island. His "Be Patriotic, Impeach Bush" billboard which stood for two months on a busy intersection in Providence, RI's capitol city, generated national awareness for his campaign among peace activists, liberal bloggers, independents and progressive Democrats. Mini versions of Sheeler's in-your-face billboard are on bumper stickers in RI and many other states, including Minnesota.

The Freeway Blogger ran a photo of Sheeler's billboard on his web site but says he prefers the homemade variety of signs for impact, flexibility and cost efficiency.

ImpeachBush.org, the long running campaign with the black and yellow artwork, may have been the first national impeachment group on the scene. Since 2003 the group has amassed about 730,000 signatures for its citizens' referendum to impeach Bush, and placed newspaper ads in the New York Times, USA Today, Boston Globe and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) launched an Impeachment Working Group this spring. Led by Matthew Gerbasi, impeachment proponents in several states collaborate via email and conference calls.

The employees of the Seattle Public Library recently passed a resolution through their local union calling for Bush's resignation or impeachment.

According to Rudolph of Impeach for Peace, "Between 30,000 and 40,000 copies of the Do It Yourself Impeachment Kit have been downloaded from the web site. We don't know how many copies have been forwarded or emailed to others." The DIY kit is modeled after an 1826 memorial by a citizen named Luke Edward Lawless who was successful in initiating the impeachment of federal judge James H. Peck. Impeach for Peace member Jodin Morey discovered the precedent for citizen impeachment while researching rules of the House of Representatives "(Jefferson's Manual").

Impeach for Peace encourages others to download the DIY Impeachment Memorial and submit copies to the head of the House Judiciary Committee and to Rep. Conyers en mass on October 12 to make a large, noticeable impact. The DIY Impeachment Memorial is "making it possible for Americans to do what our representatives have been unwilling to do,' says Impeach for Peace. "The idea is for so many people to submit the Memorial that it cannot be ignored."

The Green Party of the United States called for Bush's impeachment back in June 2005 when the Downing Street Memo, proving Bush used deception to start the war in Iraq, came to light. The Green Party has reiterated that call many times since then.

Rudolph will participate in an impeachment panel with David Swanson of After Downing Street, Bill Moyer of the Backbone Campaign, and Mike Ferner of Veterans for Peace at the VFP annual convention in Seattle August 10-13.

The Center for Constitutional Rights began offering National Impeachment Teach-Ins July 19. Constitutional scholars have developed a legal case for the impeachment of Bush and provide an online organizing tool for local teach-ins. In collaboration with Melville House Books and progressive groups across the country, CCR is sponsoring the teach-ins to share the case and its 30-minute video "How to Impeach a President." Past present of the National Lawyer's Guild and local immigration attorney Bruce Nestor moderated the Minneapolis Teach-In.

Impeachment is a topic touching millions from many walks of life. With each passing day, Bush and associates offer fresh incentive to the growing movement.
