America's right is also filled with resentment of foreign governments, even countries that have been our staunchest allies for decades, even centuries. Somehow they have come to be convinced that these countries have been taking advantage of America. They believe that the US won both world wars pretty much on its own. They believe that our troops stationed overseas are free protection for those countries at our expense. Don't try to tell them that those forward stationed bases are as much for our protection than theirs. They don't want to hear and don't believe it. Forget the fact that our alliances, like NATO, have provided 73-years of peace in Western Europe.

No folks, Trump is not a blip. Trump and the rightwing demographic that elected and support him to this day, represent a sea change. In it, I see a more turbulent politics, a more turbulent society, a more turbulent future. That 40% support (90% for Republicans) means it's here to stay.

And liberals who believe that Trump's policies will themselves so negatively impact his base, they will turn on him, are kidding themselves. It is true that Trump policies are hurting his base. His tariffs are being paid for in higher prices for imported Chinese goods at WalMart. His tax reforms benefited the super-rich at the expense of the lower-middle class. But Trump supporters will never blame Trump for any of this. Instead, they will blame those "tax and spend" liberals. How? They don't need any discussions about's just so. They're certain of it.

So, while we wait out the Trump presidency, we liberals and progressives need to start thinking and acting long-range. Even if Trump is removed or loses the next election (remember he has a 50/50 shot) nothing will change on the right. They will still be there. #They will still seethe with anger and resentment. Many of them are not only politically active, but very-well armed, and just waiting for an event that justifies their right to employ their "Second Amendment remedies.

A Trump impeachment would surely be the signal the far-right that they are witnessing a coup, and they will act out accordingly. Should he lose the next election, Trump will scream "fraud!" and they will act accordingly.

We are on the doorstep of a very different America. As non-white immigration surges, racism will become even more virulent and overt. And it's only a matter of time before other far-right tropes become common, like the age-old virus of anti-semitism, as financially disadvantaged whites blame income inequities on Jewish financiers. They'll have to turn on Jews since the real fault lies with Trump and other rightwing 'One Percenters."

I don't bring this news with any sense of pleasure. But as a warning. Our liberal/progressive democratic forces are going to have to realize that this is a form of war, revolution, sectarian violence. How do we respond? I don't know. What I do know is, right now, we are bringing only ideological knives to a gun fight.

And we're losing.
