The prospect of the US administration agreeing to the beleaguered KRG leaders' requests promises more disaster for Iraq and the West, because the PKK forces are the only ones in Iraq and Syria who have been able to defeat ISIS. By far the most politically and humanely responsible policy for the US in Iraq would be to take the PKK off the terrorist list, free its brilliant political strategist leader Abdullah Ocalan from prison and arm it with the heavy weapons needed to drive ISIS out of Iraq and Syria. Surely the sacrifice of the interests of a few Kurdish billionaire leaders is worth the security of these devastated regions of the Middle East, especially since the US cannot afford another debacle like Afghanistan or Vietnam.
Perhaps Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott was hinting to US officials a few days ago when, after announcing Australia's decision to help arm Kurdish forces in Iraq, he added that he hoped none of the weapons would fall into the hands of the PKK.
