HOWERTON: Yeah. I mean, well, first of all, I have to say that it's really cringey (ph) to talk about some of those feelings. But I put them in the book because I wanted to be really honest. I wanted to be really honest about some of the mentality that I had going in because I think it's a journey of becoming aware of my own race that a lot of white people have to be on, because I'd never been super aware of my own race. I think that's what we do as white people. We just kind of think we're default, you know? We think that other people have a racial identity and that we are just kind of, like, this void-less default or, even worse, normal. Eventually this mother came to realize her participation in manifesting and misunderstanding the harm of being unaware of white privilege. Kendi's concern, and it should be the concern of all of us, is about how white privilege can move into tolerance for, and ultimately promotion of racism. More to the case in point, he felt it important to tell the world as a professor of racist theory that just because a Supreme Court nominee has adopted two Black children, we cannot accept that she will not vote in ways that are effectively racist (as she has done in the past). Now that Barrett has been confirmed, Kendi's concerns and scholarship are even more important for us to discuss, if we can do so with research, reflection and respect.
