*Note: I am not advocating the destruction or replacement of Detroit; it's just an example, I'm not picking on you people.

For that matter, move out to sea.

A ten foot high hexagon fifty foot across built with 4" ferro-concrete hull will support about 380 tons (finished dry weight, including interior housing {1,300 sq ft interior, with 1,500 sq ft of upper deck} but excluding top deck additions; 120 tons, giving a potential load of 260 tons) , room for a home inside and garden on top. It would take about 92 cubic yards of concrete (cost - $14,000) plus other materials. This is existing tech that doesn't require a degree in rocket science. Joined together with others would create a floating, flexible mat of living space that would still be much cheaper than beachfront property. The Metro Detroit area (stick with what you started with) for example; get a map of the world and look at Detroit. Now take that spot and stick it in the Pacific. Do you see crowding? A lack of space?

Speaking of Space: there it is, resource rich, a hundred miles up and more easily reached than the New World was in 1492. You would think that if Star Trek could drive the design concepts on cell phones it can do the same for habitats.

The real question is: do we apply ourselves to new solutions for the planet as a whole? Or do we saddle up the Four Horsemen (War, Famine, Plague, and Death) for the ultimate good and triumph of the 1 to 5%? I look forward to your answers and Johnny Storm impersonations.

Peace, out.
