Some
of this "resistance" on his part is a form of grift. He is collecting
100s of millions in donations (this link is outdated now, and the total may be double the $207m reported), ostensibly to continue court challenges,
but most of it is really being siphoned off to pay his campaign debts,
some as far back as 2016. Some will be used to pay family shell companies set
up by son-in-law Kushner and others (Kusher's father was just pardoned
as a "thank you" to Trump's son-in-law too, showing that deep down,
Trump knows his days as president are almost certainly numbered).
Some at the head of the military are in a panic over what Trump will ask them to do, and current leaders have taken unprecedented steps to say they have no role in the presidential elections. But they may have a role to play, whether they like it or not, if for nothing else, but to say "No!" to Trump's attempts to retain power. Of course, Trump has, can, and will, fire anyone who gets in his way - even long-time sycophants like A.G. Barr and former D.O.D. head Mark Esper (I know - it's hard to remember all the swirling heads of the most tumultuous administration in modern presidential history).
