So Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and Jesse Helms hated Joan Rivers'
and Elizabeth Taylor's guts.
And since Joan could be considered an early feminist, Phyllis Schlafly (of
course) hated her guts as well, even as far back as 1967:
But Joan was always protective of Melissa: she dropped the F-bomb in an
interviewer who joked about her daughter:
You never got "f*ckin smart" with Joan Rivers, but now that she's
gone, it will be interesting to see how the Christian Right spins Rivers' death
as they spun Robin Williams' suicide.*
Can We Talk?
The eulogies are pouring in over the internet - all of them remembering Joan
Rivers as the forthright and brilliantly acerbic comedienne she was. Some are
remembering Joan for being the humanitarian she definitely was - how she
herself might have wished to be remembered. Her late husband, Edgar, had always
said that she would make a big difference in the world, he didn't mean just the
comedy world.
But occasionally, however, she was too candid for some people to bear: her
views on the latest Gaza-Israel conflict - "They [Palestinians] deserve to
die - they started it!" - caused quite a stir. She was unabashedly
a-political, but when she mentioned politicians at all, it was with a bent so
caustic she was criticized for being "mean-spirited:"
Joan Rivers made news recently [July, 2014] when she walked off of a CNN set
during an interview with Fredericka Whitfield.
When Whitfield suggested that Rivers could be "mean," the latter informed the
former that under no circumstances should she be interviewing someone, like
Rivers, for whom comedy is a calling.
She also took heat for saying that Obama must be gay because Michelle is a
"tranny." Trust the Right to bring that up in the near future in
order to taint Rivers' memories.
