To show that even with such a huge monetary advantage the Nixon campaign tactics were at times easily discernible to those willing and able to discern, there was one rally in San Diego addressed by Nixonian point man Vice-President Spiro Agnew that gave the tactic away.
When anti-Nixon demonstrators turned loud and ugly on cue, Agnew read from a prepared text as he denounced those who sought to impede the free speech of Americans and were injuring the cause of freedom as Nixon sought to bring the nation "peace with honor" in Vietnam.
Reporters asked Nixon's campaign team why Agnew had a prepared text to denounce demonstrators when the event was supposed to be spontaneous.
After a moment of silence the response came: "We were warned that the demonstrators would be there."
This was not the heart of liberal Berkeley. This was highly conservative San Diego. Then again, such a tactic assumes gullibility on the part of the believer.
To the gullible that answer would suffice.
