I know of no instance in the history of the court where impeachment of a judge was considered. This may be partly due to the exalted status we grant members of the highest court, which is a tradition carried over from times of wigs, robes and royalty. The president of the country does not wear a crown and sit on a throne. To bring the Supreme Court into the modern era of Democracy, I believe the judges should be subjected to a higher standard of selection based on a strong record of ideological impartiality and total commitment to democratic ideals, for as ultimate guardians of the rights of the people, they are figuratively the high priests of Democracy. All candidates must have a thorough knowledge of the Constitution, but some may come from a different discipline than law. Their opinions then would better reflect the needs of the present era rather than their stretching the words of the Constitution to fit a narrow political bias. A term of office less than a lifetime appointment would be appropriate in a rapidly changing world. Perhaps the robes should be abandoned. It's time for a constitutional amendment.
note to editor: I tried Apple Text /Edit and content still did not fit the page. Apple Script was the only thing that (almost)worked. Can you use this - or give me good instructions? I can also submit from Apple Text Edit, as recommended.
This is an older essay that still is appropriate. It was reviewed by Dr. Glen T. Martin approvingly.
