Hate speech and harassing proselytizing, it seems, are still
"virtues" not to be questioned.
What About The Children?
You know that when the Right puts children in their persecution propaganda,
they are fairly desperate: they run the risk of looking to use innocents in the
culture war as shields. The video below - titled The Thaw - has children asking
questions like "Why can't I pray in school?" The answer, of course,
is that you CAN pray in school, Virginia, it just can't be school sponsored
prayer. In fact, most of the questions asked by the children in the video can
be answered by saying "Nobody's persecuting you."
Guns and Bibles
The moment President said the fateful words admonishing people who "cling
to their guns and Bibles" the Christian Right had a powerful ally in its
war against evil, secular liberalism: the NRA. The right to feel persecuted had
become patriotic... and constitutional.
The Last Straw?
Americans may love the underdog, but they hate the whiner. Glenn Beck may have
a media empire worth $80 million annually, but his hold out in Rick Perry's
Texas is not as big as the waning ratings of FOX. Is it possible that
persecution complexes and conspiracy theories are tiring a public eager to
forge ahead with issues like marriage equality, regulations on guns and banks,
and immigration reforms? Is it possible that America is tired of victimizers
whining that they are really the victims?
"The truth is, the secular world isn't too enamored with
Jesus. And they're not too enamored with someone who is leading people to
Jesus. So if you're out there talking about people's sins, and you're talking
about righteousness, you will get pushback. Jesus Himself did. The apostles did.
I mean, there's persecution all up and down the line." - Pat Robertson
"Opposition may become sweet to a
man when he has christened it persecution." George Eliot
