Pacino's second triumph in a Lumet film came in another film based on a true life account, the 1975 box office smash "Dog Day Afternoon". Once more Lumet returned to the theme of the outsider fighting the system. Pacino played a gay man initiating a bank robbery to obtain money for his male lover to undergo a sex change.
Sidney Lumet was a master craftsman who selected potent material and combined solid storytelling through obtaining the best results from some of the film world's greatest actors.
