First and foremost they are the party of old white men, a dying off demographic. It is the party of anti-immigration, anti Hispanic, anti gay and against same sex marriage, anti women considering their opposition to all abortion, even opposing abortion in the case of rape because it's somehow an act of God. It's anti government and against all taxes. Then there's climate change denial which they consider a hoax.
The party has been captured by "tea party" ideologues which still propagate the notions that Obama wasn't born in America, his birth certificate is a fake, he's a Muslim, a socialist and in some quarters the anti Christ. They've drunk the capitalist laced "Kool-aid" with its pro big business, anti regulation, anti government rhetoric refusing to acknowledge the financial industry's mendacity in perpetrating the 2008 financial meltdown and the subsequent great recession. And they fail to recognize or admit it was government "socialism" that bailed out the big banks and preserved their cherished laissez-faire capitalist system from completely imploding.
They're also the people who supported Bush invading and occupying Iraq, believed Saddam Hussein was in league with Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, was connected to the 9/11 attacks and had weapons of mass destruction. Many of them still believe the WMD is still hidden somewhere in Iraq.
Reality doesn't seem to enter into the equation with these people. They breathe the same air as the rest of us, yet live in a parallel universe, an "Alice in Wonderland" white America fantasy world.
It's probably too simplistic to imply the Republican Party is headed for oblivion even though as presently constituted they seem completely disconnected and in denial of the changing demographic that is today's America.
It is only through Republican governorships and gerrymandering of Congressional districts that they retain a majority in the House of Representatives.
Now with that all said about the GOP, let's not forget the Democratic Party is hardly the answer for dealing with the myriad problems and issues facing America. They too are beholden to big moneyed interests and the political agenda that favors those interests.
America is in need of an independent 3 rd party, un-tethered to big corporate and fat cat donors; a party that nominates those who are true representatives of the American people.
But that won't happen until SCOTUS disastrous "Citizens United" ruling is overturned by amending the Constitution and bringing real electoral reform with a publicly financed electoral system.
Regrettably, that scenario will have to wait for another day in the future.
Unfortunately for now it's the distraction of the GOP's great dysfunction that's got our attention politically.
