"We can show the American people how we think, what questions we ask, how we hold up under pressure, how we make decisions.

"One does not become a good captain of the American ship of state by virtue of a 'resume.' You can't make good decisions on national security matters by waving an impressive 'resume' at them.

"Just look at Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld: who came to be vice president and secretary of defense with more impressive resumes in the realm of national security? and who has ever steered America into a greater national security disaster than they did with this war of theirs in Iraq?"

"Let C-Span cover the whole thing live-- all two days, or however long we decide to make it. And let all the news media have access to it, presenting high-lights, as they choose, to their audiences. Let the American people see how each of us would handle an international crisis-- at 3 AM, or any other time.

"Let the American people see which of us has the better judgment. Let them see which of us is able to ask the right questions, to get a clear picture and an accurate understanding of the situation before taking action? Let them see who has the right temperament for weighing options wisely. Let them see who stays cool under pressure and who acts impulsively or loses his temper. Let the American people see who is able to see a problem whole, in all its dimensions, and who can only see part of the picture. Let them see who has the stamina to stay clear-minded as a crisis wears on, and who gets fatigued and cloudy-minded."

In 2008, we Americans will pick a new president. But how will we make our decision?

We’ll look at the candidates’ records, but they’ll have no record showing how they’d act as president.

We’ll listen to their stump speeches, but those are invariably more like advertisers’ pitches than genuine windows into their minds.

We’ll watch them debate, but the present debates mostly flush out their talking points.
