"Respecting the female laying on hands, he further remark'd, there could be no devil in it if God gave his sanction by healing that there could be no more sin in any female laying hands on the sick than in wetting the face with water that it is no sin for any body to do it that has faith, or if the sick has faith to be heal'd by the administration." (Nauvoo Relief Society Minute Book, p. 36; April 28, 1842.)

The organization quickly grew to over 13,00 members before Joseph Smith's death in June 1844, around which time the organization as it was known was disbanded.

Other Latter Day Saint Denominations

While it is true that some Mormon branches do not allow women to hold or use the priesthood, this is not true of all. There are Latter Day Saint Denominations that have ordained women for some time. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints organized in 1844 by James Strang seven years before the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah allowed women to keep the "lower" priesthood, but denied them the "higher," for example. In 1984 the Community of Christ (then known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Chrsit of Latter Day Saints) was given the following revelation:

"I say to you now, as I have said in the past, that all are called according to the gifts which have been given them. This applies to priesthood as well as to any other aspects of the work. Therefore, do not wonder that some women of the church are being called to priesthood responsibilities. This is in harmony with my will and where these calls are made known to my servants, they may be processed according to administrative procedures and provisions of the law." (156:9b-9c, Community of Christ DaC.)

These are not the only ones, and we expect this trend to continue into the future. Even now the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints out of Utah appears to be moving in this direction. In a talk given in on October 5, 2019, Russel Nelson, current president of their denomination, hinted at the idea that women receive the priesthood from the temple endowments. This make sense seeing that these endowments are given to give the Saints access to God's power as ministers. Why give these endowments to women if they cannot hold priesthood keys? I would not be surprised if in a future General Conference it is announced that women are given these keys in some official capacity.

Women in the Fellowship

The Church of Jesus Christ in Christian Fellowship, while not really a traditional church, ordains all those called of God, per the Book of Avahr. The Lord told Joseph Smith Sr. "if ye have desires to serve God, ye are called to the work" (Avahr 10:5). This was given to a man, but speaks to all moved by the Holy Spirit to the ministry. All women and those that identify as women are welcome, as they are called of God.

The Saints of the Fellowship are organizing the Sisterhood as an equal counterpart to the male Offices of the Priesthood under the direction of the High Priestess chosen by the Lord and sustained by the body of Christ. The Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Christ combine to create the Order of the Ministry, which holds the executive keys to run the Fellowship, per the Lord. The Sisterhood of Miriam is associated with Moses' sister; Miriam, just as the Aaronic Priesthood for the males is named after Aaron, Moses' brother. The Sisterhood of Magdalene is the High Priesthood equal to its male counterpart is named after Melchizedek.

This Sisterhood of Christ will do more than give women a voice in the Lord's Fellowship; it will extend the keys of the priesthood of God to any woman who feels called of God to do His works. The Fellowship has been called to return these blessings to all women as seen throughout history, as found in the Holy Scriptures. This not being a traditional church, we are willing to ordain anyone called to start their own Latter Day Saint/Mormon denomination.
