The ratio of women to men on the jury leaned towards the female. I do not know what it is that attorneys seek in picking who will serve, but in a case like ours I can assume the woman factor played a part. Not because we would favor the woman victim necessarily, but because our life experiences as females may have given us a little insight into the dynamics of battered woman syndrome? We might be more perceptive to the theory of male dominance on a basic level? Could a panel with a majority of women jurors be fair and impartial towards the male defendant? In my opinion and from this experience I will assure you that we could and that we were. At no time did I forget that we held a man's life and future in our hands. At no time did I forget that this case was not about me or what my gut told me was true, but about a man and about a woman and always about what evidentially happened in their lives on this occasion. As American people, we tend to want to consider both sides of a tale before deciding. We tend to want to be sure we've done the right thing. We were lawfully bound by the court to base our verdict on the evidence allowed in court and based upon that information we deliberated and reached our verdict.

I know that you are still waiting for the dirty, little details of this case and of this story. So that you would continue to read, I could string you along for awhile longer but since I've been living a court ordered integrity the last few days I will tell you now that this juror will never be willing to publish details concerning an issue that effected people's lives in such an appalling manner!

Someday

you will receive that summons to serve. Someday you will be ordered to meet that challenge.

You are going to feel put out for a time when you are made to do this! You are going to wish a thousand times that they would get on with it and get it over so that you can be set free. At some point you are going to care about the lives and events you are vicariously living as evidence is presented and time goes on.

Someday you are going to tuck inside yourself a tiny bit of grief that it is over and a small part of uncertainty as to your part in the outcome of something so momentous in another person"s life. You are going to feel that justice was served and proud of your part in it. As you walk away you will know that the people and events will evermore have touched your life and you will know that you have likewise touched theirs.

You will hope that your determination was a just one as you walk back into your own life.

*NOTE* To Bailiff "Bermuda", Thank you so much for your humor and your friendly face. It truly helps.

*The preliminary examination of prospective jurors to determine their qualifications and suitability to serve on a jury, in order to ensure the selection of fair and impartial jury.
