Christ, the last time I visited church was with another of Jesus' dedicated and/or delusional Superfriends who asked me to join her one Sunday. At the time she was attending Georgetown Law, en route to a career with a prominent nonprofit civil rights organization. She was and is another genuinely spectacular person, who was also hoping to save me, with nothing but the best of intentions.

But in spite of the many, many individual exceptions to the realities of theology, the greater truth remains: human beings, of all stripes, are really bad at religion. Obviously, much of organized religion is supposed to be nice. In theory. But, obviously, the practical practice of worshipping an all-powerful, omniscient, perfect-in-every-way God is all-too-often simply a springboard to very, very bad things, no matter how many warm and/or fuzzy lines you cherry pick from a given book.

Returning us to America's favorite savior. It's tough to deny that Jesus' heart often seems in the right place. But you also have to figure He always knew what He was doing, and knew the consequences of pushing that particular lifestyle. He's Jesus, for Christ's sake. If anyone should know better, you have to admit it is Him; Jesus dropped the ball. Because despite all of that Good News and the benevolent intentions, there isn't any way around one very inconvenient corresponding fact for Christians: Jesus Christ paves the Road to Hell.
