In a field of six major parties, the Nazis received 44% of the vote, far short of the two-thirds needed for parliamentary approval of Hitler's dictatorship. No matter. Hitler used his leadership position in the government and the leverage he had accumulated from the Reichstag fire to lock out parliamentary opponents and even murder allies he feared might stand in his way. By the end of 1933, he had conquered what remained of Germany's government and related institutions, and was Germany's supreme ruler.
America's democratic institutions are considerably stronger than Germany's in the early 1930s, but they aren't immune from the attacks being brought to bear on nearly a daily basis by Trump and his allies. The intention today is the same as it was then--to undermine the rule of law, and replace it by the rule of a supreme leader.
