As a beginning know the background of the individuals running for election. Know their voting history if they are an incumbent. Know their affiliations, are they ALEC members (or have been), know, as best as you can, who is "bankrolling" their campaign as this will tell you who they are indebted to and it will not, most likely, be YOU.
Knowing the candidates is extremely important, but another is not to be a part of the "divide and conquer" that takes place every election cycle. Do not allow yourself to be a "single issue" voter as that is how many of these individuals continue to get re-elected. Every election cycle the debates over guns, abortion, gays, and others becomes the "talking points" rather than the issues that are really meaningful to our way of life. These single issues, however, have won elections for candidates and, consequently, may well be the reason nothing happens about them. For example, for the past 40 years my brother continues to vote to keep his gun despite admitting the "other" candidate is the better one, but will "take away my gun". The "other" guy has won, but nothing has happened to his gun. The "abortion" debate is well camouflaged as abortion really has little to do with the reality of it, but it is a debate as to whether one has the ability to choose for themselves or if the government has the right to choose for you. There are many who feel they should have the right to choose, but are against abortion. Again, little or nothing has changed since this became one of the single issues in campaigns.
Don't get caught up in single issues, that has proven to be ineffective and our nation will continue to slide toward Third World status.
Don't lose the faith, stay with working to getting our country back, if not for you do it for you children and grandchildren. Remember, David Koch had a goal and he stayed with it. Now 34 years later we are seeing his patience (and dollars) are getting him what he wanted. We will not reach our goals in one election, but perseverance and getting active in getting our government back will pay dividends.
