Not very many people understand that capitalism and U.S. imperialism are the biggest deterrents to world peace, and that racism has been part of our nation's fabric from the very beginning up to the present. Not very many people understand why the Rapture or Second Coming is not going to happen, or why the trinity and the virgin birth are myths. But there is a spiritual dimension to secular mindfulness meditation, if one wants to avoid the religious rituals and trappings of mystical or Progressive Christianity and Eastern religions.
So, here is my plan. I want to go to meetup.com and start a local group called "International Socialists Seeking the Divine Source Within." Even if I only get one or two people that regularly show up, I just might find my tribe. Each group meeting could have personal sharing time, if not group therapy, and much discussion, possibly after watching a youtube documentary. Each group meeting could also have ten minutes of silent group meditation as well.
If the personal fellowship group grows beyond eight members, then the group can be encouraged to divide the way cells divide. Who knows, if the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual needs of people can be met, this concept could become a movement that starts competing with the many churches on every other block.
Here is a slightly revised prayer I wrote a few days ago that OpEdNews published, but probably few people read.
A Prayer to the Divine Source Within
Oh holy, eternal Spirit--before and beyond all created thoughts, images, ideas, beliefs, and doctrines--inspire us to find ways to heal our fragile earth, our troubled society, and the world, which currently lacks peace and harmony.
Oh Ground of All Being--beyond every moment of subject-object duality--help us to be open and honest in learning about ourselves, our personalities and psyches, our minds and souls, our ego defense mechanisms, and our unconscious motivations. Help us to be open, honest, and transparent in all our interpersonal relationships, and may all nations be likewise with fairness and egalitarianism.
Oh Source of infinite love and creativity--ever-present and always within us--give us courage to change any fixed, false beliefs, any bad habits, dysfunctional behaviors, and poor attitudes, so that we can find indescribable joy and inner peace and be a light unto the world.
And finally, oh Lord, oh Mother-Father God, help us to better understand our own unique purposes for being in this world. Amen.
(Or at meal times: And finally, oh Lord, oh Mother-Father God, bless the hands that prepared this food and bless this food to our bodies, so that we can better understand our own unique purposes for being in this world. Amen.)
Context for the prayer: I have always declined to pray at family meal times. I created this prayer as an alternative to the many prayers I've heard over the years to a personal God, who is separate and distinct from the universe, who allegedly answers prayers for personal needs and the healing of loved ones, if He chooses. Conversely, I believe that meditation can enable us to directly experience the transpersonal Love Source of all creation.
