Let me close by saying that the last comment was snarky, but reflects the country's growing animosity towards an overtly prejudiced group of the Christian Right. Why can't they "own up? Probably because an abysmal righteous arrogance has always been part of the makeup of Southern Baptists.
The SBC high priests (like Land) can make things very, very difficult for churches like Broadway Baptist.
Very difficult indeed.
* A very sore point: I was at the AIDS Emergency Fund in San Francisco where I personally witnessed men and women streaming in from the "Bible Belt" - most of them evicted by their Southern Baptist families. The Fund and the wickedly liberal City gave them dignity in death. When it comes to "sin", compassion is not a Southern Baptist trait.
**And Land, it seems, is not original:
Richard Land, the head of the Southern Baptist Convention's political arm, earlier this month claimed that President Obama "poured gasoline on the racialist fires" by commenting on the Trayvon Martin shooting as part of an attempt by the media and black leaders "to gin up the black vote for an African-American president." Now it appears that Land was plagiarizing his tirade from a Washington Times column by far-right writer Jeffrey Kuhner, the Baptist Center for Ethics reports.
