Following the hearings, Martens told the NY Times the 6,000 attending hearings show the importance of the issue, leaving out the true proportions who showed up to protest fracking. "Nearly 600 individuals took the time to voice their opinions, which ranged from urging an outright ban to urging drilling to occur now" he told the reporter, conveying a false sense of equivalence.

Since then, we've heard non-stop editorials, cable TV and radio ads touting jobs and energy, but the astroturfed internet sites are a bit more subversive, purporting to represent property owners as they cherrypick studies and mock water saftey proponents as "antis". The industry is behind all of it, buying politicians across the US, buying scientists, buying media, buying silence, placing ads and planting stories. The EPA recently admitted it was misled, stalled and flim-flammed, allowing frackers to pollute our air for two and a half years.

This will become an early test for Cuomo's presidential aspirations and his ability to stand up against polluters in the energy industry. Cuomo already stands accused of turning a blind eye to known problems all over Pennsylvania fracking regions, including medical questions, water ruination and property devaluation

Cuomo's original gubernatorial campaign promised both sides would get what they wanted, but a popular documentary, a citizen uprising and a series of NY Times exclusives revealed water contamination is far more common than previously thought.

The following must-see video by Gasland director Josh Fox explains to Cuomo that the cat is out of the bag. Leaked documents prove the industry intends wells to leak from day one and forever after, and their strategy to proceed includes planting doubt using mass media.

Defering to industry till now, Cuomo will ultimately have to answer to voters. Already we see his own Facebook site hijacked on a continuing basis by "antis", asking the governor question after question about the health and safety revelations. Though the governor has chosen to converse with industry insiders behind the scenes, you can still add your comments to help quantify how the governor ignored the people.

Update: Despite respondants within "sacrifice zone" counties being split about 50/50 on the issue, a new poll finds 7 of 10 New Yorkers statewide now feel Cuomo should compile more research before approving permits.
