Fidel Castro, My Life - History Will Absolve Me

Being a lawyer himself, Fidel had no problem being his own defense at the trial. His expert cross-examination of government witnesses became so embarrassing to the government that they felt compelled to move the venue to a much smaller room at a hospital and away from news reporters and the general public. Even though it was well known by all that this was actually nothing but a kangaroo court, Fidel still proved his oratory skills and at the end, proclaimed one of his most important statements, "History will absolve me." Indeed, less than six years later he showed just how prophetic his statement was. By January 1, 1959, with President Batista fleeing to the safety of the US and his military and government in complete disarray, Fidel proved that the people of Cuba can and will rise to the occasion and forcefully overthrow puppet governments whose concern was that of another nation and not of Cuba.
