This acknowledged, an even greater peril to our democracy looms as a consequence of the mob mentality and tactics we've been constantly witnessing. These folks, one and all, are just as much terrorists, and just as much a threat to civil society and to democracy's fabric as any threat we might envision from beyond our shores. Their intent was not ever and is not yet anything other than to terrorize others into submission. When they accost our elected representatives and senators, the intent is to terrorize, not debate. When they gather outside the US capitol and other government buildings, waving the most outrageous and intimidating placards, shouting at and down others, when they spit upon and hurl venomous racial slurs at our representatives . . . the intent is exclusively to terrorize and intimidate, not to debate.

The Republican Party has been taken over by those who endorse the terrorizing, anti-democratic tactics. Listen to the party's leadership. Listen to "Hell no you can't!" Listen to "You lie!" Listen to "Baby killer!" Watch again, as the GOP leadership on the floor of the House encourages the boisterous gaggle in the gallery on. Watch again as the GOP leadership on the balcony draws a finger across the throat, as the photograph of Speaker Pelosi is raised to the crowd below.

As much as I disliked Ronald Reagan, I contend that just as dead is Ronald Reagan is, so is his Republican Party and the principles he was an icon of. Rather, today's Republican Party is as close to Ronald Reagan as the Reverend Fred "God hates fags" Phelps and his hounding of military funeral attendees is to the Christianity of Jesus. Today, those who vote Republican vote for that which typifies the current Republican leadership's tenets, not either Reagan's or anyone else's principles.

Each and all of those whom I loathe to the depths of my soul are as entitled to be here as am I or anyone else. But they are not entitled to my presence or my time, and I will not voluntarily grace them with either. Why should any of us?

An "Old Army Vet" and liberal, qua liberal, with a passion for open inquiry in a neverending quest for truth unpoisoned by religious superstitions. Per Voltaire: "He who can lead you to believe an absurdity can lead you to commit an atrocity."
