You will never be defined by what the defendant's father callously termed "20 minutes of action."
His son will be.
I join your global chorus of supporters, because we can never say enough to survivors: I believe you. It is not your fault.
What you endured is never, never, never, NEVER a woman's fault.
And while the justice system has spoken in your particular case, the nation is not satisfied.
And that is why we will continue to speak out...
Your story has already changed lives.
You have helped change the culture...
Your words will help people you have never met and never will...
And so, I believe, you will save lives.
I do not know your name -- but I will never forget you...
A few of the insightful comments on the Buzzfeed article about the loss of the appeal follow:
Amy Laurel: The grossest part about this appeal is the idea that if he wasn't planning to use his dick that makes the rest of it okay
Megan Swaine: Especially since he TOOK HER PANTS OFF. And later on when she was awake, she found like twigs and crap jammed up into her vagina. Penetrating somebody without consent is rape- doesn't matter what you're doing it with.
Emily Barnard: There have been arguments in court before that because the rapist didn't ejaculate, it wasn't rape, too. This is right in line with that.
So yeah. Ask victims why we don't press charges more often.
