HANS VESTBERG: I asked two iconic American companies to talk about how they view 5G and how they can use it. Very different from thinking about just download speed. The first iconic American company we have is the New York Times. I have the pleasure of inviting to the stage Mark Thompson, the CEO of New York Times. Mark, please come up on the stage. (Applause).

Hey Mark. Good seeing you. Excited to talk about 5G?

MARK THOMPSON: I am. We're now going to move from a Swedish-English to British-English without latency.

HANS VESTBERG: Seamless translation.

MARK THOMPSON: So Hans thank you for inviting me to join you up here to talk about our shared plans for 5G. Pretty much every company nowadays claims they are in the business of storytelling. But in the case of the New York Times, it's actually true. The Times exists to tell stories. To tell the stories the world wants and needs to hear. Once as you all know we did it with just paper and ink but today we try to use every digital display, every new advance, to bring our stories to life, which is why we pioneered the use of VR, AR, and Smart Phone infographics for serious journalism.

Yes it's why we launched the Daily which brings Times journalism to nearly 8,000 people a month. That's why we're about to launch our first major TV Consumer Electronics Show, the Weekly on cable and OTT. And also why we're so excited about the storytelling potential of 5G and about the collaboration we're announcing today between the Times and Verizon. This January with Verizon support we're launching a new journalism 5G lab at the Times. This lab will be based in our main newsroom and it will work very closely with Times journalists in New York City across America and around the world and partner with Verizon's open innovation group and get early access to 5G technology and equipment and we'll use those resources to experiment not just in lab conditions but in the field with real reporters and live news.

We believe that the speed and lack of latency of 5G can spark a revolution in digital journalism in two ways. First by transforming the wade our journalists gather the news allowing them to capture richer more immersive media and deliver their stories with much greater immediacy and second by bringing that rich and more immediate journalism to audiences instantaneously and in the form they want and need it.

Previous revolutions in mobile networks and devices have led to many unexpected sometimes counterintuitive break-throughs and 5G will be no exception. That's why the Times and Verizon have opted for the lab and the path of experimentation. So in a way the full fruit of this collaboration you'll have to wait for next year's CES. But let me give you a flavor of what we hope to achieve using stories we published this past fall in the 4G era. With this showing the aftermath after the wildfires in California you can see we weave text and photographs and AR together to put the user into the heart of the story. 5G will enable us to take this storytelling to the next level.

Remember while this piece took many, many hours of painstaking graphics production in New York, we're aiming to deliver incredibly rich 5G journalism from the field as the news happens. So that's the first gain we're hoping to make, many I can't say see. Fast reactions are critical in classical breaking news scenarios but speed is important to pretty much every story and opinion piece we publish.

Now, 5G should also enable us to bring rich multimedia to many more of our stories, more photos, more graphics, more video. More AR and VR more sound. And more innovation within each of those media. The best journalism has always tried to give the readers a sensation of witnessing the news themselves.

Being as close to the story as the story. 5G should bring that ambition a big step closer to reality. The lab will also combine 5G technology with machine learning to optimize story order and the expression of stories themselves to max the -- to match the preferences and needs of individual end users.

Location, time of day, mood state, and prior consumption can all be used to make the experience more relevant and valuable. Potentially with much of this personal data remaining securely on the user's device rather than disappearing who knows where. Times user tell us they never want to hand over ultimate user choices to machines but we recognize that 5G devices will be the most personal devices ever created. This new lab and our new partnership with Verizon should enable us to discover how to harness the personal power of 5G for news.

And finally, once widely adopted, 5G should also transform the potential for citizen journalism and the crowdsource reporting views of news. The new lab will help to unlock that potential and to solve the challenges of verification and authenticity that have dogged user generated content in the past. So as you can hear we believe we're at the start of something really big the next chapter in the story of quality digital news. As we set out on this new journalistic adventure I can't think of any company we would rather be partnering with than Verizon. So thank you, Hans, for a chance to join you up here on the stage today and thanks to all of you for listening. Thank you. (Applause).

HANS VESTBERG: Thank you, Mark. This is the type of thinking we need in 5G when we bring out this currency we need to think different to how we used to so we are really innovating and using it for the technology and for building.

What I want to know is when in the hell does Putin find the time to run Russia? He is so busy directly giving orders to Trump, posting Facebook ads, stirring up racism in America with Black Lives Matter, programing RT, and meddling in our democracy and now spreading lies about 5G technology? And fracking, vaccines, GMO's. Deny, deny, deny....of course RT is going to deny everything. It is called "kampaniya dezinformatsiya"! (irony)

The NYT just can't stop with the Russiagate bs.

Virtually every paragraph in the article I wanted to make a comment about. But I will let the one above suffice.

"Pretty much every company nowadays claims they are in the business of storytelling. But in the case of the New York Times, it's actually true. The Times exists to tell stories." That is true. But more properly it should read, "Pretty much every company including the times exists to tell propaganda."

In today's digital age, how do you make the propaganda irresistible? This is how, "Once as you all know we did it with just paper and ink but today we try to use every digital display, every new advance, to bring our stories to life, which is why we pioneered the use of VR, AR, and Smart Phone infographics for serious journalism."

Irresistible propaganda.

...

5g? Not only does it cause cancer, screw up birds sense of navigation, kill insects helping the insect armageddon, and other bad stuff, I think 5g is the last straw before we are microchipped. If so, then its over. They will know every second where each of us is. There will no longer be any where to run and hide. Total control.

Mark, thank you for the article.

Don't worry, David. Once they get done killing everyone with 5G microwaves, there won't be anyone worth chipping, or a reason to do it.

You always make good points, DA. Once 5g kills me, there would be no good reason to know every second where I was buried or where my ashes were scattered. So you are right. They won't bother to chip me once 5g has killed me. I can breath a sigh of relief. Thanks, DA.

Yesterday I sent a letter to the editor mocking the Times for its yellow journalism. I never read the times. I just saw the headline on the front page in a train station. I counted 6 lies in the first three paragraphs - and told them so. I also told them that RT was the most trusted news service on the planet - in 80 countries - a reach far far greater than the puny slimes.

Good for you, Lila! I fired off an angry letter to BBC a couple of weeks ago over a similarly dishonest TV documentary, jumped through all their hoops to send it, demanded a reply. I expected something condescending from them, but didn't get any reply. People are actually dying from the level of electro-pollution already present.

huh? Here is a quote:

The Russian network RT America aired the segment, titled "A Dangerous 'Experiment on Humanity,'" in covering what its guest experts call 5G's dire health threats. U.S. intelligence agencies identified the network as a principal meddler in the 2016 presidential election. Now, it is linking 5G signals to brain cancer, infertility, autism, heart tumors and Alzheimer's disease claims that lack scientific support.

Yet even as RT America, the cat's paw of Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, has been doing its best to stoke the fears of American viewers, Mr. Putin, on Feb. 20, ordered the launch of Russian 5G networks in a tone evoking optimism rather than doom.

Rick Sanchez (RT) just did a "call-out" to the New York Times, challenging them to produce any evidence or sources for this ridiculous piece. He included a challenge to have someone do this on RT Live, where there would be no editing of the interview possible.

RT has done many such call-outs to various propaganda peddlers, and has yet to have one of these challenges accepted or even acknowledged, as far as I can remember. Expect the NYT challenge to be just another one like that.

This is from may 13 - Rick Sanchez taking the slimes down and proving them corrupt. slimes is hooked in with verizon. to have published a commercial for telecoms as though it were a news story - and on the front page. I hope the Times goes bankrupt over this - and I hope all of the slimes editorial staff will be living directly under 5G towers. click here

Very interesting, thorough, and incisive. You have valuably opened a lot of doors of perception in this article.

However, I disagree vehemently with one thing, and that is castigating the coverage of the prisons in Syria as less than genuine; the negative aspersion you cultivated early in your article boils down to was I think removed from reality. (You wrote that is was another of "their usual spitballs of state/corporate propaganda.)

That is reprehensible and unacceptable, at least in the realm of any sane contemporary progressive dialogue.

I was astonished at that article and read every word in horror. I think it took tremendous courage, resources, and compassion to be the only paper in the world to write about that subject, at least, the only one I know of to do so, and that distinction should be lauded and encouraged to continue, not dumped on as you have.

Syrian Presents Prisoners' Names Drawn in Blood (8 Aug 2017) A Syrian human-rights activist has loaned scraps of fabric with the names of fellow prisoners written in their own blood to the U.S. Holocaust ...

Just to be clear, every American anchor on RT has stated on air that at no time were they ever censored, edited or told what to say or not to say, what to report on or what not to report on. It is a totally free-wheeling bunch of American lefties reporting the news and interviewing guests we all love to hear talk. By contrast, no journo hired at the Times is EVER free to choose what they report on or what slant they will give the reporting. They are slaves in a factory. period. same goes for cnn, fox, msnbc, abc, nbc and cbs and npr. There is no actual reporting going on at any of those "news" outlets - just government propaganda and war mongering. So the idea that RT is "propaganda" and US news is not is just laughable.

As far as broadcast media is concerned, RT is one of a very few trustworthy news sources for North Americans now. Corporate ownership and corporate sponsorship has completely ruined the news for us. We've got maybe TeleSUR and a few others that do okay, but definitely, RT is the last standing truth teller for Canada and the US.

You have to look to the "freestylers" on the web for other reliable sources, and you have to do so with your brain on "full battery", to ensure you're properly picking through the trash.

For me, corporate media has undoubtedly earned their label as "Enemy of the People". In having the audacity to call themselves "journalists" while peddling nothing but propaganda, just seals the deal.

You must be saying that there's no free press left, because a new outlet based in an authoritarian country can't possibly be free and trustworthy.

It can when it doesn't have to obey its corporate owners or sponsors, the way the American MSM has to. The people on RT are free of that constraint.

I stopped going to The Guardian and The Independent a little while back. Al Jazeera has been looking a bit impotent these days as well. :(

The Orwellian Thought Control Network is pretty much complete. RT will probably be under some form of attack soon, while the "think tanks" are busy helping the State to commandeer major Internet avenues so only "approved news" gets any visibility online.

Time to push back.

"...gathered around the short wave radio."

Hehe. Listening to the newest version of "War of the Worlds", no doubt.

This is why I keep bangin' on about decentralized and encrypted services. The Thought Police may be able to interfere with things like Facebook and Twitter right now, but they'll have no such option with the newer tools of social communication.

Not too far down the road, I wouldn't be surprised to see the emergence of decentralized internet access itself (where a user can run his/her own gateway to the Internet, without a provider). Let 'em try messing with that!

Well, I found out what I was missing. Guess I should have clicked on the NYT's link. This article posted on OEN had not reference to RT except in the title. The article in the New York Times had many references to "RT." So, while I am not all that slow, I guess I ain't all that quick either. It don't bother me to stand corrected. So, I stand corrected.

Only if you would be my co-pilot. :)

I have no interest in ever flying again. In fact it would make me happy if I never again went to the airport and went through security. I don't even want to ever again get on an airplane. Now, if you would be my co-pilot, shoot, I might fly again... :)

Here are three comments I made on the article for March 18,

Boeing's Doomed 737 MAX's

-- I would like to throw in a few comments. I don't know what is going on with MCAS and the Boeing 737 Max. But, without checking out why an auto-correcting, anti-stall feature was programmed in, it makes no sense to me why the heck they thought it was necessary. About the most basic flying skill that a pilot learns when starting to fly is to not let the airspeed fall off to the point the airplane stalls. A student pilot is taught early on how to avoid a stall, how to recognize a stall, and how to recover from a stall. Airline pilots do not stall airliners. (Note: A stall is not the engine stalling.)

Back to the 737 MAXs. Yes, there is something about the MCAS that appears to be really screwed up. Without a doubt, the airplanes crashed themselves...

By the way, I was an airline pilot.

This article is about a serious issue but I am going to add one more thing that I hope does not offend anyone. It used to be called a cockpit. When women pilots came along, they changed the name to ... box office. :)

(I was not the one who came up with that. I am just repeating someone else's humor. OK?!?)

-- Just yesterday I said a third pilot is not necessary. After that a report came out that an extra pilot saved a Lion Air 737 MAX from crashing:

As the Lion Air crew fought to control their diving Boeing 737 Max 8, they got help from an unexpected source: an off-duty pilot who happened to be riding in the cockpit.

That extra pilot, who was seated in the cockpit jumpseat, correctly diagnosed the problem and told the crew how to disable a malfunctioning flight-control system and save the plane, according to two people familiar with Indonesia's investigation.

"The so-called dead-head pilot on the flight from Bali to Jakarta told the crew to cut power to the motor in the trim system that was driving the nose down, according to the people familiar, part of a checklist that all pilots are required to memorize."

By contrast, the crew on the flight that crashed the next day didn't know how to respond to the malfunction, said one of the people familiar with the plane's cockpit voice recorder recovered as part of the investigation. They can be heard checking their quick reference handbook, a summary of how to handle unusual or emergency situations, in the minutes before they crashed, Reuters reported, citing people it didn't name.

.......

It was fortunate that a third off-duty pilot in the cockpit happened to know that the control problems that were occurring were caused by a malfunctioning MCAS and also knew how to disable it. It was unfortunate the pilots did not know the same information in both the Lion Air and Ethiopian 737 MAX crashes. But you can be sure that all 737 MAX pilots in the future will know the procedure to disable the MCAS system when encountering the same control problems.

Even so, as I explained in the 1st paragraph of my above comment, there seems to be no damn good reason to have the MCAS system anyway. Unless I am wrong about that, the simple and easy solution would be to disable the MCAS on all 737 MAX airplanes.

-- Thanks Eddy. I just checked and you are right. I thought I might be missing something because it made no sense to me why an auto-correcting, anti-stall feature would be put in; airline pilots don't stall airliners. But, I was missing something.

This is something I found:

"The Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) was developed for the 737 MAX to prevent stalls in flaps-retracted, low-speed, nose-up flight.[69] The MCAS uses airspeed and other sensor data to make an attempt at computing when a dangerous condition has developed and then trims the aircraft nose down.[70]

"Boeing 737 MAX aircraft have engines mounted higher and further forward than previous 737 models. According to The Air Current, "the relocated engines and the refined nacelle shape" cause an upward pitching moment. In order to pass Part 25 certification requirements, Boeing employed the MCAS to automatically apply nose-down trim when the aircraft is in steep turns or in low-speed, flaps-retracted flight. When the angle of attack (AOA) exceeds a limit that depends on airspeed and altitude, the system activates without notice to the pilot. The system is temporarily deactivated when a pilot trims the aircraft using a switch on the yoke."
