The United States has long extorted and bribed other countries with military and economic assistance. "Do what we say," the Mafia-like message goes, "or mob-boss Uncle Sam will cut you off." This has always been richly bipartisan, practiced by Democrats no less than by Republicans. In January of 2018, Joe Biden foolishly bragged to the Council on Foreign Relations that as U.S. Vice President he held up a $1 billion loan to Ukraine until it agreed to fire a prosecutor that Europeans, the International Monetary Fund, and Washington deemed corrupt (contrary to neoliberal interests, that is).

Trump isn't in trouble for bullying Ukraine: America intimidates and pressures weaker nations all the time. Trump is in hot water because he so obviously infused his own selfish political interests into the customary coercion. Bribery and extortion, standard U.S. weapons of imperial policy, are not supposed to be used for shameless political self-promotion and the cultivation of foreign influence in U.S. elections. U.S. foreign policy is supposed to be about bourgeois and imperial rule, not neo-feudal or fascistic personal advancement in defiance of "national security" and "the national interest." (Contrary to the Republican narrative on the Bidens and Ukraine, the change in prosecutors ordered by the Obama administration via Biden did not work to the advantage of Biden's son Hunter Biden, who sat for years on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. It's all too creepily typical of ruling class corruption that Joe Biden's coked-up son traded on his father's political name to make money from the sale of deadly fossil fuels to Eastern Europe, but the FOX News claim that Biden's bullying was about protecting his son is false.)

But even if its scope is broadened, impeachment is not a popular rebellion against the main currents oppression structures of our time, which now pose a grave existential threat to human survival (notice how the impeachment story knocked the environmental question raised by the giant global student climate strike completely off the news cycle). Quite the opposite: it's an elite process designed by slave-owning Founding Fathers who considered policy and politics the special preserve of the propertied Few, not the property-less and property-poor Many - the "rabble."

We on the portside want to put the "rabble" - the working-class majority citizenry - in the streets en masse to confront not just the fascistic Trump-Pence regime and the fascistic Trump movement but also the broader bipartisan, Ecocidal empire and oligarchy of which the Trump regime and Trumpism are both part and symptom. Trump is awful, of course. But so is the Christian Fascist Pence and so is the richly bipartisan system of class and imperial rule that gives rise to monstrous white-nationalist forces and actors like Trump, Pence, and Trumpism in the first place. The Democrats, accurately described by Upton Sinclair in 1904 as one of "two wings of the same bird of [American corporate and imperial] prey," are no angels. Behold this recent report from the corporate business network CNBC:

"Wall Street Democratic donors warn the party: We'll sit out, or back Trump, if you nominate Elizabeth Warren. In recent interviews of several big-money Democratic donors and fundraisers in the business community, CNBC has found that this opinion is becoming widely shared as Warren surges against Joe Biden. Democratic donors on Wall Street and in big business are preparing to sit out the presidential campaign fundraising cycle - or even back President Donald Trump - if Sen. Elizabeth Warren wins the party's nomination."

"In recent weeks, CNBC spoke to several high-dollar Democratic donors and fundraisers in the business community and found that this opinion was becoming widely shared as Warren, an outspoken critic of big banks and corporations, gains momentum against Joe Biden in the 2020 race. 'You're in a box because you're a Democrat and you're thinking, "I want to help the party, but she's going to hurt me, so I'm going to help President Trump,"' said a senior private equity executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity in fear of retribution by party leaders. The executive said this Wednesday, a day after Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House would begin a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump" (emphasis added)."

Read that report again and let it sink in: " several" top Democratic Party election bankrollers are ready to back the revolting racist, sexist, eco-exterminist, malignant narcissist, and neo-fascist Trump over and against not just the progressive populist and self-declared socialist Bernie Sanders but even over and against the self-declared "capitalist" and center-left Democrat Elizabeth Warren!

At the same time, impeachment should not be allowed to spread or reinforce popular allegiance to an outdated and authoritarian constitution crafted by wealthy slaveowners, merchant capitalists, elite lawyers and publicists for whom popular sovereignty was anathema. Under this ancient and purposefully anti-democratic document, "We the People" do not even elect the President of the United States through a direct majority popular vote. Our "say" on who sits in the world's most powerful office is restricted to two minutes once every four years. That's when the highly suspect citizenry gets to make marks next to names that have usually been selected in advance for it by the wealthy Few, whose practically unlimited control of politics through campaign finance contributions (just one of many ways in which the economic "elite" managers the political and policy system) has been sanctified by the U.S. Supreme Court in two key decisions (Buckley v. Valeo 1976 and Citizens United 2010). That court is absurdly appointed for life and just as ridiculously approved only by the upper body of Congress, the Senate, which is so absurdly weighted towards the nation's most rural, racist, and reactionary states that liberal California would have 38 U.S. Senators if it enjoyed the same Senator to population ratio as right-wing Wyoming. The deeply conservative U.S. Constitution requires a two-thirds Senate majority to remove the president after House impeachment. That is an extremely high bar, which is why no president has ever been removed through the impeachment clause (though the open criminal Nixon would have been had he not resigned first) and why it hard right now see the current U.S. Senate (where the white-nationalist GOP holds sway) removing the Trumpenstein short of his being shown on tape eating live immigrant children.

Amending the Constitution is pretty much prohibitively difficult, on purpose, short of war and revolution (it's long past time for the latter). This ancient and purposefully authoritarian parchment no more deserves legitimation than does the soulless and eco-exterminist American capitalist and imperial system it has long protected and helped hatch.

Impeachment must not be allowed to become what the left group Refuse Fascism (RF) rightly calls "another means by which the millions who hate what is happening become sucked into another waiting game as the Trump/Pence regime terrorizes more people." RF is correct: "no one's vision of a positive future for humanity will be possible while this regime remains in power. The hour is getting late and waiting until 2020 while this regime consolidates power is unconscionable. Sustained, nonviolent protests musts be organized and launched at the soonest possible time."

Here it is important to note that impeachment is a mobilizer for Trump's ugly and armed mass of white nationalist Amerikaners. It is also a great incentive for Clockwork Orange himself to pull some epically nasty sh*t: to start a shooting war with Iran, invade Venezuela, concoct a new terrorist menace, activate some among his army of racist mass-shooters, and/or flirt with thermonuclear "fire and fury." We must all now be on watch for how this malignant monster may go Medieval. He is a deranged and wounded beast with some awful cards in his devilish deck.

Sitting around and waiting for the masters and their holy Constitution to fix things is a great mistake. We need urgently to mobilize the people to bring down this neofascistic regime and the gruesome capitalist and imperial system that gave rise to it.

Before "Insane in the Ukraine" broke out, I thought a long-overdue mass mobilization moment could come when Orange Thing refuses - as he has essentially promised - to leave after being narrowly defeated in the 2020 election. Now I think maybe it could arrive when Monster Mitch McConnell flatly refuses to even hold a Senate trial after the House impeaches Donito Assolini either later this year or early next year. If Sonofabitch Mitch was willing to shut down an Obama Supreme Court appointment hearing - an incredibly brazen authoritarian act - you can be damn sure he won't allow a post-impeachment Senate trial of Donald Trump.

But it's not about the crystal ball or about waiting for the elites to move. The time to organize and act to get rid of this regime and the lethal system that produced it is now. In the absence of sustained mass and mobilized pressure from below, the machinations of the elites will hold the day, with disastrous consequences.

Mourn what the masters have done to this world and then organize, organize, organize. We need to take the current split within the nation's decrepit and geocidal establishment beyond the reigning investor and professional classes' definition of great historical change. They are literally running this nation and the entire planet into the ground. Only a great and sustained movement of millions can provoke the real political crisis we need.
