After the debate, the New York Times headlined the Lyin' Ted issue:

Beto O'Rourke Attacks Ted Cruz as 'Dishonest' in Debate in Senate Race

Using phrases like "Ted Cruz is for Ted Cruz" and "all talk and no action," and questioning whether the senator had delivered any results for Texas, Mr. O'Rourke took his most personal shot at his opponent when Mr. Cruz expressed skepticism about climate change and argued that Mr. O'Rourke supported higher taxes on oil. The congressman invoked an attack line that Donald J. Trump had used against Mr. Cruz in the 2016 presidential race.

"Senator Cruz is not going to be honest with you," Mr. O'Rourke said. "He's dishonest, and it's why the president called him Lyin' Ted, and it's why the nickname stuck -- because it's true."

"It's clear Congressman O'Rourke's pollsters have told him to come out on the attack," Mr. Cruz replied.

The New York Times published a guest editorial from Mimi Swartz, Executive Editor of Texas Monthly, which concluded with this:

"Texas isn't a red state, it's a nonvoting state," is the line that started making the rounds as Beto's candidacy was gearing up more than a year ago. It's not a bad way of combating decades of Republican gerrymandering, voter suppression and the bedrock conservatism that has been with us here since, oh, Texas joined the union in 1845. The canvassers have been out in force, on college campuses and in neighborhoods that probably haven't ever seen a voter drive. There are voter registration cards in nail salons and smoothie bars, which is certainly a change.

Maybe this will be the year a progressive candidate with a positive message wins in Texas. But if he doesn't, we'll still know who we are.

The astonishing fact of the matter, of which Cruz doesn't seem to be aware, is that Beto O'Rourke doesn't use or need pollsters, since he has for a long time disavowed them as unnecessary, since he is speaking directly with the constituents and doesn't need an intermediary to interpret what they have to say!

In the wake of the second debate between Beto O'Rourke and Ted Cruz, I have some ruminations, conclusions and insights to share with you.

After spending many hundreds of hours doing all I could from our little blue bubble called Santa Fe, the capitol in the neighboring state, to help Beto win, all of which revolved around journalism and educating voters as to the real contest, I have learned a few things.

1. Without exaggeration, and no hyperbole intended, I believe this campaign is truly a contest between Good and Evil, between "We, the People" vs. the corporations, between the humble working and thinking classes, and the billionaire plutocrats.

2. I have noted a strong adherence among Democrats to ethics and morality, and an unwillingness to cheat at the polls, but to fight back hard in the realm of ideas and ideals, while adhering to the truth, fact checking, and an overwhelming sense of compassion towards those disadvantaged Americans who have no other voice in the civic process except for those who will stand up and speak for them. Want to learn about cheating at the polls, how it is done, when it started in the 21st Century? Watch this 80 minute film on YouTube: Uncounted: the New Math of American Elections. .youtube.com/watch?v=pisBdNLmo-A You will see what we are up against, and damned if I have any solutions other than the Democratic party hiring a small army of forensic computer and voter machine experts in advance of the Midterms, instead of devoting so many millions towards this relentless and ongoing plethora of television advertising.

3. I have written numerous articles about the tactics and rhetoric of the Conservative Funding Father, Richard Viguerie, with his FedUP PAC, spouting and spewing all sorts of fanatic accusations against Democrats, especially in Texas, as baby killers, violence prone radical socialists, potential persecutors of Catholics, and so on, preying on the less informed in our populace, shoveling up the most ignorant tripe imaginable so that the ignorant and uninformed remain ignorant and uninformed, yet still vote the way the conservatives want them to vote. For example, just one of these articles: "BRANDING DEMOCRATS?" More of Richard Viguerie's Lunacy: Democrats as "Far-Left, Radical, and Violence Prone Socialists" see also: click here

4. This all reminds me, sometimes faintly and sometimes very loudly, of the buildup of the National Socialist movement in Germany in the 1930's. We all know what that led to, because for too long it went unchecked, until it was a case of too little too late, leading inevitably to a horrible global conflict called World War II.

5. Against this backdrop of current affairs is the unspeakable ascendance of the unchecked corporate power. For decades, these corporations have grown to first strangle then entirely do away with what we used to think of as proper and legitimate government regulations. The FDA, for example, has been adrift for decades, and I fear will be forced in the coming years to go through what the Environmental Protection Agency has gone through of late, an emasculating abnegation of what once was a solemn set of obligations. This will lead to a whole new generation of ever worsening neurotoxic food additives, overpriced pharmaceuticals, factory farming loaded with antibiotics, arsenic in chickens, bovine growth hormones, etc., and a bunch of regulatory eunuchs with little or no statutory powers.

6. Anyone who dares to question such vital matters or pin any of the blame on either the GOP or the Democratic Presidential appointments at the EPA or the FDA is immediately labeled a communist or socialist, as I have recently experienced in a supposedly non-partisan Facebook group of Texas teachers. Some of the criticism in that group resulted from a post about how Beto was not taking PAC money and was piling up his $38 million record setting war chest entirely from small donations. These were from ostensibly well-educated educators and librarians in Texas with very long experience.
