Throw in the easy access and availability of guns including military style automatic weapons.
Then add in hate, racism, fear of "others", alienation, mental instability, disrespect for authority and the gun massacres we see today.
Terrorists and terrorism "seem" to proliferate but reality indicates one has a greater chance of being hit by lightning than being attacked by a terrorist. No matter.
Thus the "need" for public pronouncements in train stations and airports, "If you see something say something", surveillance cameras at every intersection, license plate readers, monitoring of cell phones and all electronic devices plus the reinforcement of the "enemy" narrative by the government and its complicit, enabling corporate MSM. Further reinforcement comes with extolling of our military, flyovers at professional sporting events, military heroes cited in the stands, ex generals and admirals pontificating as "experts" on TV "news" shows. It's all a bit much.
To challenge any of this "messaging" is denounced as fake news, conspiracy theory, Russian interference.
Recently this writer came across the following in an article by one Terrance McKenna, "The cost of sanity in this society is a certain level of alienation".
Oh so true.
