Toward a Global Marshall Plan
Mr. Gore's 1992 Plan would have allocated money to help impoverished nations achieve patterns of sustainable economic progress. The US alone, by redirecting the funds now spent supporting armies of invasion and occupation, could contribute $100 billion dollars a year for ten years to such a plan. A UN fund of $200 billion per year (used in this way) could have made a substantial impact on the world economy thus benefiting the people of the developed, as well as of the impoverished, nations. It could have improved the quality of our children's lives instead of placing their lives in jeopardy.
It is Our Resposnsibility
We must convince our presidential candidates that we are ready for a real change.in foreign policy in 2020. Their self-interest, at present, lies with the production of military goods and the amassing of power and wealth. Our self-interest, (that is, the self-interest of our non-wealthy 90 percent), on the other hand, includes promoting general peace and world prosperity. It follows that we must let them know that we are ready for a peace policy and a tangible peace program for which to hold them accountable.
