Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, testified in a United States Senate hearing against the President's decision to cancel America's return to the moon and the President's vision for America's future in space, voicing skepticism of the President's plan to rely on new space taxis developed by private companies after the space shuttles are retired. "If the leadership we have acquired through our investment is simply allowed to fade away, other nations will surely step in where we have faltered," Armstrong said. "I do not believe that this would be in our best interests." Eugene Cernan, the last astronaut on the moon, testified the President's budget for human space exploration "presents no challenges, has no focus, and in fact is a blueprint for a mission to 'nowhere."
