Cortes told the gathered of far-off fights --
crusades to save Islam from infidels;
Calafia shot up in noble tights
and raved of parapets and citadels
those gathered roared, laughed, imagined the sights
of the Middle Sea, rang warrior bells,
and Calafia chose a queen pro temp,
made her lift her eyes and peered into them.
XXII.
The Californians raved all day and night
gorging, slurping, and sad to lose their queen,
but imagined her keen blade's shining light
lopping darkness -- the low infidel's bean.
