United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was in Iraq where he met with General Ray Odierno, the top US commander in Iraq, and Iraqà ‚¬ „ s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for an assessment of the withdrawal of United States troops from Iraqi cities. Gates said the drop in violence may speed up the withdrawal of American forces in Iraq. There are presently 130,000 American troops in Iraq, with 10,000 scheduled to be withdrawn by the end of 2009, but, according to Gates, 5,000 more could be home by Christmas.
