President Obama hosted Astronomy Night on the South Lawn, bringing 150 local middle-school students to the South Lawn to check out more than 20 telescopes and numerous exhibits, to star gaze and conduct hands-on experiments with astronomers from across the country. The President spoke about the importance of science, engineering and math education and his support for astronomy's capacity to promote a greater awareness of our place in the universe, expand human knowledge and inspire the next generation of explorers. United States Attorney General Eric Holder and United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan traveled to Chicago, Illinois and met with city officials, community leaders, students, and parents. Afterward, with Chicago city officials, Holder and Duncan called for a national conversation on values to address youth violence in the wake of the fatal beating of a Chicago high school student. Day259/Oct8th/Thursday: The President was briefed by Vice President Joe Biden, in the Oval Office of the White House, on Recovery Act progress. Biden informed the President that, while the vast majority of proposed projects met the Administration's high standards from the beginning, more than 170 projects were halted or modified in the last seven months to ensure even better use of Recovery funds.
