President Barack Obama announced his intent to nominate the following individuals to key administration posts:

David Huebner, Ambassador to New Zealand and the Independent State of Samoa

David D. Nelson, Ambassador to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Source&Bios

President Obama hosted Astronomy Night on the South Lawn, bringing 150 local middle-school students to the South Lawn to check out more than 20 telescopes and numerous exhibits, to star gaze and conduct hands-on experiments with astronomers from across the country. The President spoke about the importance of science, engineering and math education and his support for astronomy's capacity to promote a greater awareness of our place in the universe, expand human knowledge and inspire the next generation of explorers. The event was live-streamed on http://www.WhiteHouse.gov, and in addition, there was a live video chat beforehand with Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, with questions taken via Facebook and Twitter. United States Attorney General Eric Holder and United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan traveled to Chicago, Illinois and met with city officials, community leaders, students, and parents. Afterward, with Chicago city officials, Holder and Duncan called for a national conversation on values to address youth violence in the wake of the fatal beating of a Chicago high school student. Day259/Oct8th/Thursday: The President was briefed by Vice President Joe Biden, in the Oval Office of the White House, on Recovery Act progress. Biden informed the President that, while the vast majority of proposed projects met the Administration's high standards from the beginning, more than 170 projects were halted or modified in the last seven months to ensure even better use of Recovery funds. The President had lunch with business leaders in the Private Dining Room of the White House

The President met with senior advisors in the Oval Office.

The President visited the White House basketball court to observe the National Naval Medical Center Marine Wounded Warrior basketball team playing there.
